Marriage

Genesis 2:22-24

The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man. The man said,

“This is now bone of my bones, And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.”

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh.

God defines marriage as a union between one man and one women. Any variant to this is sinful. Men are forbidden to marry men and women are forbidden to marry women. The polygamy practiced by Abraham, Jacob, David and Solomon was sinful. The Bible records the behavior but never justifies this lifestyle practiced in the ancient Middle-East. Jesus highlighted this truth pointing back to Genesis. Paul’s defines marriage to deacons and elders. It is faulty reasoning to think this doesn't apply to Christians as well.

Matthew 19:4-6

And He answered and said, “Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate.”

1 Timothy 3:12

Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households.

Peter builds on this understanding (1 Pet 2:24).
