Coincidences
Coincidences
The early Christians knew there were two ways to view time. The first focused on the passage of time chronologically; chronos. The other way to view time was to see it as strategic moments when something more than just the mere passage of time is in play. At these strategic moments, several different layers of life and reality converge at a given moment and provide great opportunity. This kind of time was called kairos. While we don’t completely know why or how things work out the way they do in those moments of opportune time, we believe that God is behind the moment. It is more than coincidence, fate, or the alignment of the planets. God is at work redeeming time, working in history, and shaping his people through strategic moments and events. There are no such things as coincidences.
Dr. R.C. Sproul describes chance this way: Chance has no power to influence anything, It has no power to do anything. Chance is not a thing. It is nothing. For something to have power or influence, it must first be before it can do. Chance is not an entity. Nothing happens by chance. To say that chance can cause things is utterly impossible scientifically, rationally, and theologically. The word chance is merely a word we use to describe mathematical possibilities, like the 50/50 chance of a coin turning up heads after a toss.
Acts 17:24-28
God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands. Nor is He worshiped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things. And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings, so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being…
We are free creatures living out what God already knows will happen and is even sovereign over. If we catch of glimpse of His sovereignty in events that He ordains, the world may call this a coincidence. However, Christians see God's providence at work in these moments. God is in control. We see in Acts 2:22-24 that God predetermined the actions that would put Jesus on the cross. Could the Men of Israel chosen other actions to change the outcome of history God has decreed? Not according to this passage. They acted freely, however God used the intention of their hearts as part of the plan of salvation. When God decrees something it will certainly come to pass and no free actions of men can alter God's sovereign plan. God then holds men responsible for their actions according to the intention of their hearts.
Acts 2:22-24
“Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know— this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death. But God raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in its power.
